Project name: Active Futures:
Increasing Physical Activity for Underrepresented Young People in Bromley/London.
Purpose and aims: The project seeks to increase physical activity levels among underrepresented young people, while also improving mental well-being, resilience, and social connections.
By embedding youth voice and co-design into the programme, we aim to create inclusive spaces where participants feel safe, represented, and motivated to sustain healthy lifestyles. Ultimately, the project will contribute to reducing health inequalities and building stronger, more connected communities across Bromley.
Target groups: Have special educational needs, are refugees or asylum seekers or newly arrived migrants, identify as LGBTQIA+, are young carers, are hearing impaired or have other physical/learning/sensory disabilities.
The Active Futures project will deliver a programme of inclusive sport and physical activity sessions for young people aged 8–16 in Bromley who are at greater risk of inactivity, including those from (BAME) backgrounds, young carers, care-experienced young people, and those who identify as young LGBTQ+.
Main activities: We will provide weekly multi-sport sessions including football, basketball, athletics, and alternative activities such as yoga. Alongside the sporting element, wrap-around support will include mentoring, confidence-building workshops, and safe spaces for young people to share their experiences.
Holiday programmes will be offered during school breaks, providing structured activity and reducing isolation. Family and carer engagement events will celebrate achievements and encourage ongoing participation.
Where they will take place: Activities will be delivered at accessible community venues across Bromley, including Downham (Wesley Halls) Community Centre, Queensmead Recreation Ground (outdoor facilities) and New Woodlands School (special needs school).
Spaces have been chosen for accessibility, safety, and inclusivity.
Frequency and duration: Sessions will run weekly during term time, thrice per week for 1.30hr/day @ 5-7 PM or 12-2 PM on weekend and with each young person encouraged to attend regularly for at least 6–12 months.
Holiday programmes will provide additional intensive engagement during Easter, summer, and winter breaks.
Delivery team and partners: Sessions will be led by qualified Sports Coaches and Youth Workers from CLUB HERO in partnership with Future Challenges, supported by a Project Coordinator overseeing delivery and safeguarding.
We will work with referral partners, including local schools, carers’ networks, and foster care services, to ensure those most in need can access the project. Training for all staff and volunteers will include cultural competency, trauma-informed practice, and LGBTQ+ inclusion.
